Developing sustainable tidal energy
West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen has a 250-hectare inland nature and recreational area that is directly connected to the Westerschelde via a tidal culvert. The tidal culvert is constructed in the primary flood defence and with each tidal cycle, approximately 1 million m3 of sea water flows in and out of the coastal area behind the dunes, enriching the natural life. Should an imminent storm surge arise, flaps located in the tubes of the tidal culvert will close to ensure safety against flooding. Iv provided the reference design of the tidal culvert, the replacement flood defence system and provided system-oriented contract management.
